An authentic local capture of the cartridge. The visual guides below explain the decisions to look for.
At the top speed, Racer can introduce pairs of cars in two lanes. The remaining lane is the immediate opening, but reaching it safely requires seeing the pair early and checking what is already beside your car.
Identify the empty lane first
When two cars arrive together, there are fewer useful choices than in a single-car pattern. Find the unoccupied lane near the pair, then compare it with your current position. Do that high on the road. Waiting until the pair is close can leave insufficient space to make the required change without crossing another threat.

An opening above is not a clear path below
The lane left open by the pair may contain an older car closer to you. Read the whole route, not just the pair itself. You may need to let existing traffic pass before moving. The visual fact that one lane is open at one height does not guarantee that the lane is safe across the full approach.
Two changes need more planning than one
If the opening is on the far side, moving through the middle introduces another decision. Check the intermediate space as well as the final lane. Do not begin a hurried double change without looking. The right lesson after a collision may be to recognise the pair sooner rather than to execute the same late movement faster.

The level name is not the only condition
Journey stages vary their pair chance, starting speed and spacing. Some pairs appear only once the required speed condition is reached. Read what actually arrives instead of assuming every wave matches the title. A replay is useful because it lets you recognise the shape of the pressure while still watching the current road.
Two blocked lanes, three separate checks
Suppose a pair arrives in the left and middle lanes. The gap in that band is on the right. If you are already on the right, the task is not to steer: inspect the older traffic near your car and the following band above the pair. If you are in the middle, one clear right move may be enough. If you are on the left, you need two valid lane changes, each with a collision-free destination.
That last case is where reading only the distant gap fails. An older car occupying the middle near your bumper makes the first move unsafe even though the right lane looks inviting. Detecting the pair while it is high on the road gives you time to resolve that intermediate obstruction. The generator creates single-car or two-car bands, never three cars together in one new band. That still does not mean every hurried route across different bands is safe; your position and timing determine which opening you can use.
Why TWO ABREAST may begin with single cars
The pair chance on a journey card is only used once the run reaches speed three. TWO ABREAST starts at speed one and its main target is 25 passes, so most of the opening can consist of singles before the top-speed condition is reached. Do not assume a missing pair means the level is broken, or that every later band must be a pair. The chance controls eligibility, not a guaranteed alternating pattern. Continue reading the actual lanes rather than steering from the stage name.
A focused practice attempt
Use a later available level and leave boost unused while learning paired traffic. Say the open lane as soon as a pair is visible, then check the route to it. After each pass, return your attention upward so the next wave does not catch you watching the previous one leave.
